“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1-2 ESV
Psalm 121 is the second psalm in a series of 15 titled, Songs of Ascent. During the days of King David, who is believed to have written Psalm 121, these songs of ascent were often sang while travelers were on a journey. Now, depending on which song, scholars have different opinions of when they would have been sung. But, for Psalm 121, it is most commonly believed that this song of ascent was sang to instill confidence in those making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship; Jerusalem, of course, being the place where the tabernacle was. They had to look to and ascend into the hills to reach Jerusalem where they knew the tabernacle was; where they knew God was! Though God is obviously omnipotent and omnipresent at all times, the tabernacle was a place where they KNEW He would be!
Our hope and prayer at Church of the Hills is that pilgrims on a journey are able to have the same confidence in the hills surrounding us! We pray that when people look to the hills and look to our church, they will KNOW God is present and active among us and they can find help in His arms!
